They rose up one by one
When the sirens sound.
So many of them would go up
Few would return to the ground.

They soared like winged horses
Charging towards the enemy.
Hearts filled with bravery
Sometimes hope was all they’d see.

Incredible skill they had
To fly the horse of war.
Bullets, skill and luck was all they had
To even up the score.

So many of them lost their lives
While helpless friends watched on.
One minute they were on their wing
The next minute they were gone.

Some would fall in smoke and flames
Franticly trying to break free.
Sometimes they lose their fight
Becoming engulfed by the sea.

Those that returned paid their respects
To those that flew to save lives.
They were never to be seen again
But will always be there in their minds.

We owe our freedom to those that went up
To answer England’s call.
Thanks to so many that went up
and the few who were never came home at all.

“Never in the field of human conflict
was so much owed by so many
to so few” (Winston Churchill)
