Standing up on the wagon
behind the John Deere Baler,
putting the hook into those bales,
and lifting them up on to the wagon.

Your sweat gets in your eyes,
and almost makes you blind,
and sharp hay twigs
dig into your bare,
sweating chest and back,
there’s no time to rest,
just keep lifting those bales.

Then the tractor speeds up,
because it might rain.
By the end of the day
you’re all messed up
in mind and body.

It’s just another stinking,
sticky,
day on the farm.

After a while
you get to hate it,
because you don't
want to be there.

Bobby

extremely effective realism!

a fine impression of that particular historic corner of the 'work-a-day' world.

Thanks Secondhanddreampoet,

Yes, this goes way back.  I still get out in the country when I'm forced to.  I see now the bales are big and round, and left in the field.

That's a big improvement.  Kids are a little luckier these days.

Thanks for the kind words on this one.

Bobby, that brings back so many memories for me as I carted hay for many years. A mighty hard job on a stinking hot day.

You wrote it well.

Thanks LindsayP,

Yes, it was a hard job.  I'm glad this touched you with some memories, even if they weren't that pleasant.

Thanks for reading and commenting.
