If you haven’t tickled the earth
with a pick and shovel
under a blazing noon day sun—

well then brother,
you haven’t worked at all—
and those that do despise you,

they’re just too nice
and polite to mention it.

Bobby

ouch!
this is quite a bold post!
maybe i haven't worked as hard as others--but i have tried to do good--and i thank that counts as work!
at the same time i do not disrespect those who have worked very hard in their life.

i think it takes some balance!

::smiles::    I like this a lot.   My Daddy used to say, "If you aint sweatin' you aint workin'"

I have a PhD, ya know ?    Even though it stands for P  ost  h  ole   D  igger... it has helped me make ends meet many times.

I like this a lot.

Yo Danny,

It's great that you try to do good.  That counts for a lot.

Thanks XOx Uriah xOX,

I'm pleased that this one worked for you.

Bobby,

I like this one too.  I grew up with horses and it was a lot of work maintaining fences and putting up hay.

Good poem, my friend.

My Dad used to punish my brothers and I by making us work.
He was very resourceful and once had us dig a cesspool so I can relate.

Thanks dear Alison,

For the kind words on this one.  If you liked the horses, then the work would be kind of a pleasure for you.

Thanks dear Ida,

Cesspools are very valuble things to have if you live in the country.

Thanks for reading and commenting on this poem.

I can certainly relate to this one Bobby as I've erected miles of fencing of all types and sizes, one of the reasons why I'm in a wheel chair today. Enjoyed the post my friend

Thanks LindsayP,

I'm pleased you can relate to the poem.  It's very true that hard work can hurt you.  The other, more popular saying can be a lie.
