Jammin’

Some things predict particular stuff
and of stuff and such I’m not quittin’
so here I will sit, a-jammin’
though our music wasn’t writtin’
unless and then if you could hear
the burble of such a sweet song
that this stuff and such is a-smellin’
a peculiar, sweet belong

for it came to me, this own sweet word
of “jammin’”, with all its’ memories
and how sweet and good the rhythm made
of its own vocabulary
for we stood and peeled, singing songs
washed all those jars, then sweated them
so that preserves, we’d see winter long
and hear our summer, in some long song

from throw-a-ways day old from market
our grocer knew to bring and park it
in our yard; for we would make it good
and preserve and bake it up for food
then share among our neighbors over
the breaking of a loaf, and clover
for bless’d be the honeybee
in days of bleak, we made things be.

~*~

And that is called, helping one another
Before the days of our so-called big brother.

My thanks to Peggy, Betty
and their father;
And for the neighbors that we knew
In 1960 through…

Yo Sunshine,

This is very nice.  It reminds me of my wife’s Grandfather, who was a doctor in South Philly.  During the depression, he fed his whole neighborhood.  My mother-in-law used to stand at the door and pass out sandwiches.

This must mean I wouldn’t have to hit your garbage cans to get a bite to eat.  That’s great work you guys did.

Love Bobby

Robert, we had ways of continuing to take care of our neighbors that probably stemmed from the memories of our folks who had grown up or were born in the '20's and '30's. As I'm sure you may remember. We never expected anything back, and the less we expected, it seemed, the more we received. It was a blessing to hear from the grocer's daughter just today, to say that she would be sharing the poem with her father and family, as they could smile over the memory of a true neighborhood - even in California.

Donna, jammin' was a peculiarly wonderful time - because we were also baking, too! Thank God we were in California and within shore winds, because we didn't have AC, and the stove always seemed to be "on!"

Poddar, thank you, Sir. I won't disagree with you, but I'll take your blessing with a chunk of salt, because I truly know my limitations.

Toe...do you know that just knowing you read this will make me smile all the way through August!

Greeneyes, you're too young to remember. Aren't you?    Thank you, sweetie!
