"Dandelion"

My favorite flower is a weed
Or so I'm often told
By those who claim to know such things
With voices meant to scold

But I care not what others think
(A trait that cuts both ways!)
And fervently I plead my case
For yellow-gold bouquets

"A field of green," I often start,
"Is beautiful, 'tis true,
But why not add a touch of gold
To compliment its hue?"

And sometimes this is just enough
To sway them to my cause
But others firm within their ways
Will hardly give a pause

"Need I remind you all, my friends,
Of days of youth gone by?
When flecks of gold on summer grass
Would catch your wandering eye?

And I would bet, for one you love,
You'd pick a 'weed' or two
Then race straight home with childish glee,
Through meadows soaked with dew"

With this I've swayed another few
Though some refuse to see
But I'm content with knowing we'll
Agree to disagree

This is a lovely argument for the other side of the weed controversy.  Joyce

Ha! Do I ever know this. Dandelions are such useful plants, almost completely edible and healing!

Well written, and I enjoyed this very much.

I am rather fond of dandelions myself. When I was little we lived in a part of New Mexico where that was about the only flower around and they looked pretty good to me.
I think you did the lowly dandelion justice here.

I love the way mother nature talks to us..... Dandelions certainly do brighten up the day with their carpet of sunshine, but at the same time they are a very important herb to assist in detoxing the body. Take a look every year what wild plant seems to be the most dominating variety and then look it up in a herbal book.. Its more than likely a herb and your body could benefit from its properties . This year i have noticed two very prominant ...one being cleavers (Galium aparine)used mainly to assist the lymphatic system and drainage of waste products in the fluid and the other being self heal (Prunella vulgaris) is excellent as a spring tonic.

Very well written with excellent use of imagery. The rhyming style made it a very lyrical and enjoyable read.

Loved your poem... one of my first poems in the spring of 2000 on here was:

Dent de Lion

There you were, golden maned
popping up everywhere I looked
as I leaned back yesterday,
enjoying the warmth of an after rain.

Drawing me to you, I plucked you
from the meadows, beside the stream
brushed you lightly against my cheek
surprised at your softness,
and how delicate you really were.

All my life you were but a weed
though cosmopolitan, and to some
an herb, producing a dandy wine
to drink or as is, edible to feast upon.

I eyed you, held you, played with you
studied your strong stem,
your little hairs, fine tuned...
breathed in scent of sweetness.

Why was I so surprised...
sensing your want of acceptance?
Yesterday, you received mine.
I kissed you with my lips and you
left your tracings of gold upon them.

A weed no more, I see the beauty in you.
