I was ten when the world
and a guy named Ray decided
that I needed to lose my innocence.

Pitchin' pennies on the corner
with my little brother,
my mother upstairs in the kitchen.

A silly argument in the bar,
the kind that always ends in death,
all because of the color of their skin.

Ray and the almost-dead guy,
decided that the black men didnt belong
in their bar, sharing their poison, drowning their misery.

Words ensued, blows followed,
then the inevitable chase out into
the daylit street.

Yelling and then firecrackers popping,
the almost-dead guy now the dead guy
laying in the street with his life pouring from his neck.

Yanked into the house by my mother,
more firecrackers and the guy named Ray
getting shot in the leg.

Watching from my bedroom window
with my mom trying to stop the bleeding,
a too-small finger in a too-big dyke.

Ten years old when I watched my mother's
hands stained red, when my innocence bled out,
just like the dead guy in the street.

Ten years old that summer when I looked
at the blood stains on the street and saw
the tears of an abandoned infant...

How sad for a child to be a part of that reality and it is a reality. In my neighborhood gang violence is just a part of life. You told your story in a memorable way.
