Oh, Magical Great One

Such magnificent beauty stilled my heart;
it bestowed awe upon all those who gazed.
The Great One, Denali, rose from the clouds,
and it created a magical day.

With a glance, the mountain shifted the clouds,
and washed the sky in various shades of blue.
It loomed, alone, over hill tops of green,
proudly enhancing the beautiful view.

Denali gave a gift to me that day,
offering beauty so hard to believe.
The memory will linger forever;
the day the mountain decided to please.

Such magnificent beauty stilled my heart,
and created a magical day.
The Great One, Denali, rose from the clouds,
and bestowed awe upon all those who gazed.

Ali ...
At first I thought I would have to look up what Denali was, and then I suddenly remembered:
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
There is something in here; this is a vision too elemental, too breathtaking to describe in words, so I am trying to imagine it.  High up in the clouds above the freezing layer.  Is there still snow on it?  Is there a clacier more or less permantly on it?
Why am I so taken with clouds, altitude and snow in the middle of summer?
Wandering around in paradise ...

Oh Kacy is going to love this glimpse back at her old stomping grounds.  The first time I saw Denali my breath was taken, as it is every so often Mt. Ranier shows its lovely face to me up here.  Lovely poem Alison.

Dear Jaime,

I think that this response may turn out to be a letter - so hang in with me, okay?

I spent my birthday at Denali Park.  This is an interesting and beautiful national park.  It is huge - actually it is larger than the state of Massachusetts (did I spell that right?).  The park is home to Mount McKinley (Alaskans tend to call the mountain "Denali").  Denali is the Alaskan Indian word for "The Great One".  The state of Alaska has wanted to change the name from Mount McKinley to Denali but it has to be passed by Congress.  The Senior Senator from Ohio blocks the bill every year when the senate convenes.  President McKinley was from Ohio and .. they want to keep the name of the mountain to honor him.

When I was at the park the other day, I took an eleven hour trip by bus into Wonder Lake.  That's about 26 miles from the mountain.  When I left in the morning (I took the 5:30 am bus), it was overcast and raining.  Within two hours the sun came out and Denali was showing.  It was amazing.  I have seen it many times before, but it is such an amazing mountain.  Denali is the tallest mountain in North America.  It has the highest vertical slope in the world.  It is snow covered and has glaciers and crevices.  The mountain creates its own weather so even with the sun shining, sometimes it is hidden in clouds.

There is an abundance of wildlife in the park.  There are few trails and very few roads.  The traffic is heavily controlled and animals are the priority.  People can not really interact with them much.  So, I saw grizzly bears, caribou, mountain sheep, Golden Eagles, and so many more beautiful birds and animals.

I hope that this helps you see what I saw on that wonderful day.

Your friend,
Alison

Alison.
There is a volcano or place in Alaska called the valley of ten thousand smokes.  I think it is a crater or field of fissures in the ground from which steam and volcanic gasses escape.  We read about it back in kiddy school many many moons ago.  It erupted, I think, in 1912 and the eruption sculpted  a formation called the valley of ten thousand smokes.  The eruption was so violent that it hurled dust into the stratosphere which rode the westerlies around the world.
I have read that, at times, in summer, the parts, teeth, and even the entire carcasses of prehistoric creatures may get washed out at glacial moraines, the bodies having been frozen and perfectly preserved for thousands of years since the height of the last ice age 20-000 years ago, so well preserved that even the color of their fur is apparent and even their stomach contents completely preserved.
This has always been so fascinating to me, actual specimens of animals that lived during the ice age before the Americas were even inhabited by humans.
I read a book by Farley Mowat, in which he relates the rich folklore and elaborate mythologies of the Eskimo people that dates from before the discovery of the new world.  The people that inhabited the North actually already had names for themselves, and were called "Eskimo" by the Europeans who considered them to be savages. I've seen the three sisters quite a few times on my visits to my family up in Oregon, but I have never had the pleasure of visiting Alaska, and her mother mountain.

How many times I've stopped at our Mt. Shasta in Cali on my travels up north, just to gaze at her majesty.

These castles to the sky are, natures momuments of glory, symbolizing forever, standing guard over all, as they reach for the heavens.

Great job Alison!

You paint a beautiful picture of that wondrous mountain Alison and I can certainly agree with what you say. My wife and I went looking for grizzly bears in the foothills around that great mountain and we were very fortunate in seeing eleven. A great write my friend, much enjoyed.

Dear Jaime,

I have never been to Katmai, but it is another national park and has lots of bear.  I'd love to go see it too.  I either have the Fawley Mohat book or my mom does.  I'll have to dig it up and read it.  I don't think I have ever read it.  Another book that is really good that you might enjoy is "White Dawn"  It's about whalers who are iced in for the winter and live with the Eskimo.  It's a really powerful book.

Thanks for reading my poems, Jaime.
