All I Know

Looking through the glass
at the slanted blue sky buttoned fast
to the shrouded second-hand misery in my mind
and all I know falls away, leaving me behind
leaving me in a rainy open grave
of all the desperate love I gave
of all the beautiful love I brave
I proved it to you

Down the pipe dream to green
envy painted over my beloved fading dream
I keep the shards of all the hearts collected from women
the foolish ones that surrendered and let me back in
bringing me within an inch of beautiful
with this heart-shaped wrecking ball
with my hopeless romantic idiot soul
I give it all to you

And all I know falls away
slo-mo,
watch the white dress sway
no no
don't want to feel this way
don't go
don't pull the shades down on this day
you're all I know
don't let me go
don't fall away

Across the cheek to teary-eyed
at the blank page I just stare, mystified
try to wring out all my feelings into clever wording
stave off the heart's starvation, the graceful hurting
leaving an imprint on the cobblestone
of all the love in my tired bones
of all this I know I will begin to atone
for the love of you

Hoping all I know falls my way
let go
of once-brilliant skies faded to grey
oh no
coming around again to feeling okay
we grow
watch the sunrise halo over the dying day
and all I know
my beautiful glow
say you'll stay

Looking through to you
at the heart left half-buried and blue
and the clouded thoughts I carry into the dawn
tripping over the wires and notes of this damn song
and oh all I know fell away, but I'm gonna find
a way back to the precious dreams I had in mind
for you and I, for the raining greying days they unwind
back into sunshine
and I'll prove it to you
and I'll move it to you
so you can bask in the glow
bright just like all I know
of you

"In her soft wind I will whisper,
in her warm sun I will glisten,
till we see her once again
in a world without end" -- Neil Finn, greatest living

Yo Soul drifter,

Poetry does not have to rhyme.  I'd try loosening this up so that it would be more understandable.

Sometimes poetry rhymes. But hey, this isn't a poem anyway, it is a song, without music, just sorta...lyrics. Every now and then I do write and post actual poems, but most of what I do is song-structured.
I never wanted to be a poet. I always wanted to be a songwriter. I guess right now, I'm not really either one of 'em.

Thanks.

oh I think you are a (fantastic) song writer! and I think to write songs, you have to have the heart and soul of a poet, so people will connect with your music and feel it. At least if it's to be a good song...lol

for me though I hear them with a 70s kind of music thing going on, but I really really like 70s music
