Angelo gets a summer job,
working for a roofer.

It’s a hard,
long,
hot, work day,
starting out at dawn.

He’s up on our flat,
black tar roofs.

It’s hot up there,
even in the morning.

By noon,
Angelo’s stripped down
to his sneakers, and shorts.

The perspiration
just rolls down his back,
soaking his shorts
with his own sweat.

Lifting those forty pound
buckets of hot tar
twenty or thirty feet
can make you sweat.

Angelo could have an easier job,
standing on the corner,
selling grass,
and white powder
to the fools.

No, Angelo won’t do that,
he won’t mess up
other kids lives,
just to make the easy dough.

Angelo doesn’t make much money
for his hard labor.
That’s all right.

His neighbors will have
nice dry houses
during the wet days
of spring,
summer,
fall
and winter.

Angelo's 100%
a union man.

Bobby

Dear Midnitesun,

I'm sure you do, if you have a flat roof like mine.  Angelo's fixed my roof a number of times.  He always does a great job.

My house is about 170 years old, so it can have a leak in the roof every now and then.

Love Bobby

Angelo an I have something in common, I am still active in my union even though I am retired. Angelo is a smart guy. He will eventually be successful while the guys on the corner are in prison.

Thanks dear Ida,

You are correct as usual.

Yes, the poor souls on the corner will either be in prison, or dead.  It's a blessing that there are so many more Angelos in the hood, than the poor souls on the corner.

It's sad to see the corner kids.

God bless the unions.  My wife was union, and I've always supported them.  She belonged to the ILGWU.
