HOPELESS JOY

in the mirror
tributaried wrinkles
flow
from my eyes

beneath my feet
tarred cracks
vein the pavement

under the daytime star
an unseen heart
pumps water
from here
to here

the last time
I was a child
I was taught
to play
connect the dots
with the stars
as if they could ever be
connected
as if they ever were
apart

calendars are peeled
like onions
but it is the first Monday
in January
again

I shave
in the nighttime
mirror
where a single star
makes the pencil
of my finger
pointless

there is nothing
to do
and between the star
and me
is heard
the ubiquitous sigh
of hopeless joy

There must have been something very meaningful happen in your life on that first January Monday.
Now I'll never look at a calendar in quite the same way as before reading this!  So many fine lines and images in this, it was hard to select just one to highlight.
BTW, Anthony, thank you for your kind reply to my 'Morning star' poem!

"Calenders are peeled like onions' brilliant! I share Kacy's enthusiasm for this penning, Anthony.

Now I will avoid all Calenders as they will remind me of onions.

"as if they could ever be

This is poetic genious.  Poem is really good, and these lines just made me go "Hmmmmm" and I read them over and over and loved them more each time.

"as if they could ever be
connected
as if they ever were
apart"

Wonderful.
