LE VER DE TERRE ±1978 Un jour sous une pierre, j’ai trouvé un ver, un ver de terre, sous une petite pierre. J’ai dit à ce ver, ce ver de terre, “Bonjour petit ver, petit ver de terre, comment va ta mère, petit ver de terre?” Mon ami, le ver, le ver de terre m’a dit: “Ma mère et mon petit frère voyagent sur la mer dans un bateau tout vert et mon père a l’air d’être plein de misère.” THE EARTHWORM One day under a stone, I found a worm, an earthworm, under a little stone. I said to this worm, this earthworm, “Good day little worm, little earthworm, how is your mother, little earthworm?” My friend, the worm, the earthworm, said to me: “My mother and my little brother are sailing on the sea in a little green boat and my father seems to be full of misery.. - Owl |

Yann ~ Je suis d'accord! Diana Dearest, it really helps me in recalling the French I learned in high school, when I am able to read both translations. I like it when Yann does that at well. I can read French fairly well, but I forget all the rules and regulations when I go to write it, so please 'pardon my French', if you will!  This poem reads equally well in Francais et Anglais. I thought it is probably fine to post in French when there is an English translation, but I was a little dubious about using it in replies, and thought I may get into trouble for it, so it is particularly pleasing that you are enjoying it. - Owl |

Dear Diana, do the French eat worms? I know they eat snails. I'd have to say, that in either language, this poem basically wormed it's way into my heart. It was so cute, just like you! Rich |

Thank you for your delightful response. I don't know whether the French eat worms - we would have to ask Yann, as I have never been to France. However, though owls eat worms, this one (me) doesn't. I'm very happy that the poem wormed its way into your heart. Did you notice the wriggle shape of both poem and translation? Perhaps that's how they wriggled in. I like the way the poem is structured like a wiggling worm, but more importantly a beautiful little story with an open ended moral that engages my mind. Fine work! Art |

Hello dear Friends, French eat snails alright, frogs (such delicious) but not worms, may be chinese do it, it is surely full of proteins. It was delightful reading the comments... Love yann |

Thanks Gilead. I am glad you enjoyed the poem. It brings back happy memories of the childhood of both my children very vividly. Thanks for helping us out with the information, Yann. I don't think I could eat snails and frogs legs. They are my friends, but then so are all animals and I eat meat, so I don't understand my own logic! Smiles. - Owl |
