What comes after
an owl cry before
where I came from
it is all in a step
a stranger keeps pace
behind sober sorts
in a blindspot
long sandaled walks
measured steadfastly
after one has drunk
on the fringe

The beat may be
from apartment fronts
people on their way
to homelessness
drink on the edge
lose that control
marking sanity

Bars accept only
clearer faces
troubled looks are dismissed
that comes after
squalid nights
binges on the fringe
and same name festival
all in steady pace
after one drinks
on the edge

it follows from
apartment fronts
slum lords christen
to a local cafe
feigns interest in a menu
then stomps out in rage
a stranger always keeps pace
before great-horned eyes
blink in panorama.

I always enjoy reading you, Martin.

I am not very good at responding to any poems that are about drinking ( and usually don't) as my most recent experiences have made me have negative thoughts about the topic. But I wanted you to know I read you~~
and have missed your words.

Hi, Martin! It's been awhile!

The lines that I quoted stood out for me. Yes, 'tis a very sad scenario ~ and far too common.

A sobering snapshot of reality for many.
Well done, Martin.

I read and wept - but it's not true to say bars only accept clearer faces - they accept any face with coin behind it.

Pleasure to read all you comments, I have not been writing poetry as I should recently...and the drinking problem was one issue I wanted to address....
