To Face The Day

Dressed up in shades of mellow
upon her day she did embark
outside the sun was shining brightly
but still inside her heart was dark.

She sat poised up in the carriage
with duty she took her daily ride
a painted smile worn upon her lips
while hiding pain that flowed inside.

She looked out over fields of cotton
as the dust clouds drifted out behind
struggling to reason with herself
his memory returning to her mind.

Riding past grand ole river banks
the coachmen guided them to town
with gloved hand she waved to all
no, she dared not to wear a frown.

Ladies and Gents were passing by
parasols, tipped hats, "How do you do?"
with curtsy and reply she'd say "I'm fine"
but inside her heart was turning blue.

Then somewhere amongst the crowd
his strong voice ringing out too clear
her heart made its silent retreat
with soft shedding of single tear.

Her heart beat then did quicken
when his way she cast her glance
and her heart slowly died inside
he in love, with his new romance.

Bred with southern grace and pride
subtly she turned to walk away
the smile fading from her lips
not to make a return that day.

The journey made back from town
once again passing cotton fields
giving in to loves sweet sorrow
once again her heart did yield.

Yo Gentle Spirit,

Shades of "Gone With The wind."

I never could quite understand my southern "Jerdan"s.

Nice work.

Oh, lovely, lovely, lovely, lovely Donna, but sad.  Loved the picture too - as with the others, especially the horses.  I can't wait for the next one.  I do hope this is all going to end happily - at least eventually!

Caoptures the "spirit" of southern gentility very well.

Dear Donna, you write about a different time in history and oh how things have changed since then but you wrote it so well, with great rhyming. Sad but a joy to read. Love

Lindsay
