Angelo thinks
he’s pretty good
at playing chess.

He thinks he plays
a mean game.

After middle school
he’ll go over to
Ben Franklin Parkway
and get a game of chess.

He’s good,
so he plays for money,
and usually wins.

He finds a kid sitting there
with a chess board
looking innocent.

Angelo sits down
for a game or two.

The kid takes Angelo
for all he’s worth.

Angelo finds out later
that the kid is one of the famous
“Mighty Bishops”.

Grand champion chess players
from over at Vaux Middle School*.

Author’s Note:

My adopted son is an African American.  He once worked with one of the Mighty Bishops, and he brought him home to play chess with me after work.  The kid took me for all I was worth chess-wise.  I was lucky we weren’t playing for money.

Now that is a wonderful way to spend time, dear Bobby! Thank you for the link, really interesting! By teaching the children to play chess with such mastery this man has given them a fantastic gift.

You put that together very well, I love this... and also the added note.

Love,
Margherita

Just proves you can never judge an "innocent" book by it's cover.

Thanks dear Ida,

You have that right.  Never get into games of chance with strangers.

Love Bobby
