The old men stand proud
before the scattered crowd,
the battered warriors
of half-forgotten wars.
With trembling hands
they salute the flag
and recall their youth
lost on foreign shores.

A marching band plays
and speeches are made
on this solemn day of remembrance.
Some reflect on the victories
but most remember the losses
and grieve for those who lie
beneath the miles of white crosses.

Yo dear Ida,

This is very good.

In this Port Richmond neighborhood of many veterans both young and old, Memorial Day is always very big, with a big parade, and speeches on the corner of Allegheny Avenue and Richmond Street.

hello Ida, as a french I know that we owe a lot to american soldiers during WW II, they give their lives for people they didn't know, they were young and had good spirit and heart....They were heroes and I thank they by the hand of your touching poem...

  Have a nice day

A vivid, patriotic portrayal of a "Memorial Day Ceremony". In Canada we have Remembrance Day on November 11th each year to honour those who bravely fought and died in the World War. Those ceremonies are much like you have so realistically written about here.

God bless them all! ~ and you, Dear Ida.

Linda

You wrote this with great sensitivity, dear Ida.
It's a pity that humanity has not yet learned the lessons of so many wars  ...
The immense extension of those white crosses for mostly very young men really is a heartwrenching view.

Love,
Margherita

Alas, Ida, the fields of white crosses continue to grow. We are warlike and predatory (human) and I dearly hope we evolve beyond the genetic propensity for territoriality and violence. Your poem speaks so powerfully to the triumph and tragedy and sadness in this dilemma.
