her father would sit
with a rolled up towel
supporting his neck. his daughter
never bothered
asking why,
he never made much sense to her.
his sons didn’t need to ask, they’d been
in locker rooms and knew
a towel is a weapon
even when it’s only used for resting.

when she was very young sometimes he
would bring her to mountain forests
and show her how to track bears
and moose and how to build fires.
he taught her to walk
like she was in a jungle
being stalked,
so she learned that silence
is safe.

she asked him once
about his war because
she wanted him to tell her he was a hero
and undamaged, but all he said was
if he had known better
he would have stabbed himself in the leg.

now she walks
like a giant tank through forests,
scaring all the creatures on purpose

because she would learn that silence
is permissive.
and sometimes when she sleeps
she still dreams that no one can hear her
when she screams.

this is an excellent write...loved the resolution of your ending:

"because she would learn that silence
is permissive.
and sometimes when she sleeps
she still dreams that no one can hear her
when she screams."

I enjoyed the flow of this insightful poem.  But the ending was the most evocative:
"because she would learn that silence
is permissive.
and sometimes when she sleeps
she still dreams that no one can hear her
when she screams."
It was the unexpected twist that clarified the rest.
