While I whittled to stay the sun
The moon and stars
Reckoned with dismay,

“We are ready to rise!”

I continued, until a few rays
Of splintered, silver light
Pressed against my pen

Soon, heavenly hosts
From behind the eastern veil
Resumed their lament

“How will the sailor navigate?”

“What of the ebbing tide?
And where will all the wishes go
If ‘First Star’ your stroke should hide?”

Smiling, I continued, until nothing more
Than a ghost-light sliver
Held tight against my winding-down prose

And then,

With a period, put to rest my pen
Leaned back on soft, green grass
Eyes toward horizon far

And that is how I came to speak, complete
With the moon and stars!
