It is hot today
Oppressive
and depressing.
My wind chimes hang silent.
No breeze stirs the leaves
or cools the brow.
My plants are drinking
like drunks on a binge,
drinking the water
I'm supposed to conserve.
My air conditioner is gleefully
counting up the money
like a greedy miser
and I'm counting
the days until October.
Maybe a trip to the beach is in order.
School is almost out,
the kids would love it.
Now, Where is that picnic basket?

Your creative images of summer's unrelenting heat were much enjoyed.

Dear Ida,

This is very nice.  Don't stray too far into life as it really is.  You know that's not allowed here.

The reality is kind of scary! I feel the emotions so intensely, and I feel compelled to ready myself for the coming summer, and the absence of little niceties that we like to ascribe to the seasons. This is finely written, and resonates in my mind of advancing years!---Leave it to me to find the shadowy side of every sunlit rose!

Thanks for sharing a wonderful write!

I hope that the heat has relented some for you.  Good writing (and I hid the picnic basket until I get invited to join you).

My dear, Ida. I gotta tell ya girl, each visit to a post of yours ~ is a trip! Literally! You put me in another place ~ and so convincingly!

It's cool where I live, but now I have the urge to turn the air conditioner on! lol

Can I join you on that picnic? ~ I'll bring some of my homemade potato salad, biscuits, fried chicken, and of course my special 'angel' food cake to top it off!

Blowing a refreshing breeze your way from north of the 49th parallel,

Ida, you are so funny, even if you're not trying to be lol.

I'm from Cali too. It's not hot these last few days is it? It's been windier than all get out, and now it's even raining up here in the Central Valley.

Hey, but count me in on the pick a nick. I'll bring a striped bass I just caught, and make us some fish tacos WooHoo!

Loved your poem!
