Summers were a joyful time.
No school, no shoes, no worries.
Freedom.
No schedule, no hurry.
No Monday through Friday school week.
Free to run loose in the woods
and wade in the creek,
to climb trees and pick cherries.
Freedom.

Seaching through the tangled vegetation
for wild strawberries
and making strawberry mud pies
for my "bakery."
Freedom
to jump off the back porch roof
in an effort to fly
or just to lie in the grass
looking up at the clear, blue sky
and feeling free.
I didn't realize then
that I would never feel so free again.

Excellent poem!!  Reminds me of something my son said a long time ago, that he works too, after all he goes to school!!  Sheesh!!  I told him that's the easy part.  He admited a couple years later that he thinks about that comment a lot, now that he doesn't have a standing three month summer vacation or a two week winter break.  He learned pretty quickly that in the real world you gotta earn your vacation time, and that it accumulates very slowly!

What nice memories your poem brings to mind.  Those were the days alright!!

Dear Ida,

This works pretty good.  I'd put a period after "bakery".

Ida,

The feeling of dirt roads under bare feet on hot days.  Grass tips to make spices for playing house.  And rolling down the hill inside empty 55-gallon drums.

All those were freedom to me.

Wonderful replay, dear Ida, of that unique sense of freedom.

I remember the exact place (near my favorite lilac bush) when I meditated upon the fact that those were to be my last school holidays ... the total sense of freedom was accompanied by a sense of carelessness that in later years was impossible to find, as a newly acquired sense of responsibility and duty took hold of my mind. Now I reach heights of freedom in meditation and in some nightly dreams full of wonder.

... ah the feeling of bare feet touching different grounds, heavenly connection to Mother Earth ... and the cherry trees is another experience you remind me of (I even swallowed the cherry stones and maintained this habit for a long time, my husband found I was totally crazy to do that, but it was part of a joyful memory and still is ...).

Thank you for this nostalgic write.

Love,
Margherita

My dear, dear Ida, 'Ida' say that I identified with every word that you have written!!! ~ But then again, that shouldn't surprise me! ~ I usually do!

Oh, those were the days ~ the halcyon days of summer! Funny thing is, I did appreciate them when I was experiencing them! ~ and savoured every blessed minute of them!

Giving you an extra warm hug for bringing back such wonderful memories.

So, so, true. I often think back to when I was younger, and all alone, with nary a care in the world, and nothing but the hope of future ahead of me, and how promising life felt.

When I was young, I wanted to save the world. Now, I just want to save, the dream.

Great Job Ida!

ida, i share the understanding and the feeling of the loss.
always enjoy your expressive abilities.
"freedom", a wonderful poem and a wonderful thought...thanks for sharing. suggest "loose" for "lose"...bobby must have missed that one. rv

Ida - When raising my children I often recalled the freedom I had as opposed to what they experienced because they were born into ... crime!  They weren't as safe "out there" as I was but they were happy because they didn't know what they were missing. Enjoyed your look back - thanks.
