i write not for understanding
or themes of the mind
i write not for comprehension
or depth, or knowledge, or skill

artesian-like the words simply flow
and meanings follow only
in the minds of those who read
examining the paths i took

when blind eyes saw not the soul
of meanings dark and deep
or wandered through the forest
of phrases stripped of shallowness

i write not for others, you must clearly see
i write not for meaning—i write simply for me

I, too, enjoyed this poem, steaven. I think that a good poem resonates with the reader, and in some way the reader is enriched, whether the poem is dark and heavy, or light and capricious.

I appreciated the poem and your independent approach to writing.  Keep writing for yourself the rest of us won't be far behind.

A reader's interpretation and understanding ~ or misinterpretation and misunderstanding ~ of a poet's words, comes from their own world of conceptions ~ or misconceptions. Therefore, a poet should ultimately be expressing his or her own reality and allow others to interpret it as they may. However, it is especially gratifying when there is a meeting of minds ~ and hearts ~ between the writer and the reader.

You write! I read! ~ and I always enjoy!

It rings true indeed I never tell what a poem is about and when asked if they got it right I simply reply "it means whatever you want it to mean."

Steavenr,

If you write only for yourself, I’d advise keeping a journal.

Ida, thanks for the ‘mutuality’ and for the kind reply

Art, you’ve well stated one of the purposes of poetry…thanks for reading and commenting

ARTIC WIND, thank you kindly

sharyn, your comments are always far too gracious, but thank you (for I gladly accept them, if not humbly)

Linda, You have said it far better than I could ever express it…glad you enjoyed and I appreciate your lavish comments

AAB, yeah…but I say that to my wife, it drives her crazy…thanks for reading

James, thanks for taking the time to read and reply

Bobby, thanks…I think…oh well, I think that’s a compliment.  I’m far too obtuse to take it as any thing else…(and as they say, anyone who can use the word ‘obtuse’ in a sentence, probably isn’t)

I guess we all write for "me".  Sometimes what we write takes us further than we intended and sometimes we learn something new.  If our journey is meaningful for others then that is a bonus to be enjoyed.  Keep writing!
