Sonny Boy,
our good buddy,
was he ever beat up this time!
head all swollen,
lips fatter then ever,
big ugly lump above his brow.

Someone asked if Mrs. Fronnie,
his mother, was okay.
He was all sadness and silence
as he shook his head in the negative.

We huddled for a plan of action.
A penny here, a penny there,
warm soda pop, remnant
of a secret candy bar---we were ready
for some serious business.

We had to do something,
maybe kill his old man
and bury him deep in the woods.
Naw, that was too scary---the devil
might get us!

We just talked it over, and as the day
wore on, little men in high council
rounded up the guns and horses,
and went into the woods to play.

I posted this one, Bobby, in tribute to you, and to Felix, and all of his friends.

Thanks Art,

I'm afraid we don't have woods to play in here.  We do have the river bank, where we went to talk things over at night.

We'd sit beside some ancient hollow logs, that used to be sewer or water mains for the ancient city of Philadelphia.

Wawa and Felix/I used to sit there, talk, and watch the fraighters go by in the river.  we sat there and talked about my dad, who wasn't there.

Felix and the gang say thanks for this great poem.

Bobby

my soul, how this reminds me of my growing up:

"We just talked it over, and as the day
wore on, little men in high council
rounded up the guns and horses,
and went into the woods to play."

How very realistic of children settling issues. I love the 'little men' description.

Aha! I'm not crazy! After reading your poem, I read your comment "I posted this one, Bobby, in tribute to you, and to Felix, and all of his friends."

You certainly did a good job of it because Felix and the gang came to mind as I was reading along! lol

Thanks for the comment, Bobby. The "Felix Chronicles" if I may use the expression, reminds us all of the beauty and the ugliness of growing up. You capture it with an eloquent simplicity that makes it all come to life.

Little Men making big decisions.  Isn't that too often the case.  I think it's time for grownups to be grownups and let the kids to play in their children's world in the woods.  Excellent Write  Thanks for sharing
