It’s a cold winter night,
the snow is deep,
about three foot,
and it’s still snowing.

Felix’s foster Dad is downstairs
with his buddies from the bar.

They’re still drinking,
down there drinking
the foster Dad’s booze.

The foster Dad is bragging
to his friends,
about how tough Felix is.

“That boy is tough as nails.
Hell you can give him a good whipping,
and it just doesn’t faze him—
and work, hell, you can work that boy
from sun up to sun down,
and it doesn’t bother him one little bit.”

“Oh yeah,
how tough is he
in the cold, and snow—
huh!

I bet he’s a little punk
in the cold and snow.”

“Nah,
the cold and snow
don’t bother him none.
He just laughs it off.

Come on,
lets get him out of bed,
you’ll see.”

Felix hears the men coming up stairs.
That worries him.
He’s heard what they were talking about.

They burst into Felix’s room.

The Foster dad
rips the covers off Felix.

He’s lying there in the all-together.

The men grab Felix
by the legs and arms.
They carry him drunkenly
down the stairs.

The foster Dad
opens the front door,
and the men throw Felix
out into a snow drift.

The men close the door.

Felix recovers quickly,
and runs to the door.

He begins beating on the door,
and screaming to be let in.

In a long minutes,
the men open the door,
and Felix runs in.

The men grab hold of him,
and force him to drink
a big shot of whisky.

They don’t want him to catch cold.

Felix shivers and shakes
his way back to bed.

Thanks Dear RDB,

As you may know, like many brutal people, Felix’s foster Dad came by his brutality honestly.  The foster Dad loved Felix.  Just listen to him brag Felix up to his pals—and Felix loved his foster Dad, for all his rough ways.  Like a lot of rough people, Felix’s foster Dad didn’t know any better.  That’s just the way he was, and yes, he was a constable, that’s something like a country cop, here in the land of the free, and home of the brave.

Felix enjoyed playing with his foster Dad's sleeper, and blackjack.

Joyce,

God bless him, I think he may have been a little bitter.  He was a part of a big farm family.  One brother was a well respected and wonderful priest; another brother was a diplomat, while another did construction.  His sister was a most wonderful nun.  All of them were well educated.  He got stuck with the farm.  Looking back on it, Felix feels that may have made his foster Dad bitter.  Like I say--who knows?  Felix loves all of them, I should say, loved all of them, as they are all long dead.

I know that's no excuse, but I loved the guy.

hmmmmm...I find myself asking if the brutality is forgivable because it was survivable or because it was acceptable...your writes have been captivating to say the least

Steavenr,

Thanks for reading and your comment.  I'm pleased that you find my writing captivating.  The book should come out sometime this year.

Here's an interesting point.  I never mention him in my autobiography "City Boy Stays Alive".  I just thought of that.

Perhaps it's easier for me to lay it on poor Felix.  Sorry Felix.

Thanks Seoulair,

Now remember, this is Felix's foster Dad we are talking about.

Felix's real Dad, poor man, died locked up.  Felix's real Dad would never do anything to hurt Felix.

Now I'm  upset. Stuck on the farm indeed!!!

There is no better life than farm life, even though it is  hard work.  My dad was a farmer through the depression and I never saw anything but kindness and love from him.  I don't think he would have changed his farm life for the highest paid city job.  Joyce

Yann,

Yes, I agree.  It was unfair drunken bullying.
