Grand pap
was always good
with Felix.

He’d sit little Felix
on his lap,
and blow smoke rings
for him
from his stogie.

Grand pap doing that
always made Felix laugh.

Grand pap smelled good to Felix,
much better than
those other men,
because he was Grand pap,
Grand pap always did.

Grand pap knew everything
about Felix,
and what Felix had to do.

It never mattered one bit
to Grand pap,
Felix was his fishing buddy.

Grad pap and Felix
many times
could be found at night,
down by the river,
fishing off
Penn Treaty pier.

Grand pap always
baited Felix’s hook,
until Felix got older,
then he’d bait
the old man’s hook.

Grand pap never hit Felix,
no,
not even once.

Felix held Grand pap’s hand
while Grand pap was dying.
Grand pap murmured
Felix’s name
while he was dying.

Grand pap and Felix,
they were buddies
to the end.

Bobby

Grand pap was certainly Felix's source of unconditional love.  Thank you for this new perspective into what makes Felix who he is.

Dear Joyce,

Thanks for the kind words.

Grand pap and Felix were lucky to have each other.  They were two real buddies.

Grand pap taught Felix to be a real, live, compassionate man.  Felix never would have made it without Grand pap.

Dear Sharyn,

You nailed it Hon.  It was indeed unconditional love.  That's the best kind.

For me, this is the best 'chapter' in the Felix story ever!

very fine writing!

[one of those 'literary standing ovations' for this one!!]

I am very close to my grandchildren and my great granddaughter. I didn't have grandparents and my children really didn't either. My relationship with my grandchildren make me realize what I missed. I am so glad that Felix had a Grandpap.

Thanks Secondhanddreampoet,

Thanks for liking this one, and, of course, for the literary standing ovation.  You would have liked Grand pap too.  He was a good old guy.
