April, 1980

I bore your heavy toolbox, Father.
Now I am one of the silent bearers
Descending the steps to the waiting hearse.

You are as heavy as earth crushing my heart,
But I’ll not be so foolish to cry, not now, not here
In this sunlit day turned inside out!

I’m still a boy, Father, and I’ll be brave.
My back is stiff and straight, my chin hard as stone.
Ah, but my heart is soft and bleeding—
All hearts will bleed this bitter blood;
I am not alone . . .

Thanks, Seoulair, for sharing your feelings with me; it means so much as I pay homage to my father in the month of his passing.

Gilead,

This is a nice poem about a good father.
