             My Garden of Dreams.

I dream again of a sunlit sky in the days when I was small,
Of when I played with my little dog who’d always answer to my call,
Of unhappily going off to school that day when I was a child of five
But happy when I got back home and realize that I’d survive.

Things were tough away back then in my early childhood years
But we were brought up on a farm and food was never in arrears,
My mother was talented cook and supplied us all with tasty meals,
Perhaps not fully appreciated then, as memory now reveals.

And rabbits played a very large part in putting meat upon the table,
Mutton too in a tasty stew made our meat diet somewhat stable,
We generally kept a pig or two so we’d have pork and bacon
And from twenty or thirty chooks the eggs were there for takin’.

Money was so very tight back in those early youthful years
And although we always paid our bills they were often in arrears,
But it taught us how to thrifty be and buy only what we’d need
But it never done us any harm and caution was the creed.

Shopping day was once a week, eight miles in the horse and cart
Should we forget a thing or two, it was anything but smart,
We just had to tighten up the belt and wait another week
But we survived without much fuss & just turned the other cheek.

The biggest thrill every year was the annual Birchip show,
Dad always rallied to our call when we said we want to go,
Five bob he’d give us each to spend, our excitement really great,
Disappointment far away as we drove in the showground gate.

A water pistol we always bought, it created so much fun
And the boxing tent was a big draw card and rated number one,
It wasn’t till we were in our teens that we’d look past sideshow alley,
We then took an interest in the stock & with them we’d dilly-dally.

Now an electric wheel chair takes the place of legs now paralysed
But it is just a change in style and my way of life resized,
I look forward to each new day and my blessings daily count,
For I know whatever troubles come the problem I’ll surmount.

Lindsay ~ my friend, thank you for sharing this beautiful garden of dreams with all of us.  You inspire me on many levels - one for the kindness that you continually show.  Two for the optimism that shines in your poetry.  Three for sharing your life with all who choose to read.  It's like you are the host in your poetry and we are your invited guests.   Thank you for inviting me.

Dear Lindsay, I much enjoyed "visiting" your garden of dreams, you even reminded me of my mother's stories about the simple pleasures of her childhood, where there was no room for luxury and where there was real contentment with much less than what seems a need today to be happy with.
I learn that there have been tough changes in your life, yet your attitude is still that of a grateful man, which makes you really precious in my eyes.

Great job, dear "Aussie man".

Love,
Margherita
