On Kansas plains
when the south wind blows,
for those who pay her heed,
rises forth the voice
of long agos,
ghost of pasts by south wind freed,
war cries of the Kiowa,
as settler widows wail,
echo through the Gypsum Hills,
flow down the Ninnescah,
on cattle drives to Abilene,
along the Chisholm trail,
cowboys whoop and holler,
drowning out the blackbird's caw,
Quantrells' rifles blasting,
"Bloody Kansas", in Lawrence death,
preludes Johnny Rebel,
a' killing brother Yank,
and then on the wind,
sounds a distant breath,
Coronado's quest, chain armor's clank,
in search of cities built of gold,
aye on Kansas plains
when the south wind blows,
a history of a State is told,
on Kansas plains
when the south wind blows.

now i wanna no more about kansas... it amazing how poems can leave people with a perfect history and yet not really tell us a thing sometimes. I really enjoyed reading it.
