The pavement cracked today,
in fact it crumbled to pieces.
It left a two inch cliff hanging
over dirt, hot from the earth’s breath.

Quietly we huddle together.
With our hands we sift this dirt
while our red faces squint,
searching, wishing, feeling.

We squat and scratch like pigeons,
our noses hover above the gravel
with our eyes, we filter the granules.
There must be something here.

Sometimes the sun would trick us
with shimmers of light from the dust
of which our brows would leap
and we’ll whisper hope to ourselves.

The years would past here, in this desert
and our skin can only thicken in this sun
while our bodies sigh from its heat.
But our thoughts will keep looking.

Perhaps one day it will rain and this dirt
can melt away. Then, we might ask ourselves
how much longer must we play
in this sandbox before we really….begin to age.
