Listening to every heart

The Season of Everlasting

A season for every reason; corresponding reasons for every season
even when droughts deluge us with dry time
when rains flood us, sparely, with rainbows
when seconds count but hours mount
against us

when we cry, drily, and shrink, slightly
enlighten, darkly, when shadows gleam…
not knowing how much we bring to others;
nor realizing how much others depend on our love.
Can we ever know, truly, what untimely might mean to others?

Thus it was, perhaps still is, though we suffer our losses,
still, is it as much as others? In my mind,
‘tis a wonder; for it has always been they
who suffer more, my losses are not theirs;
theirs seem so much more…or is it transference, only
and mine seem smaller         only in comparison.

Should loss take a foothold on any ladder?
Is it a badge we wear against another’s pain?
Or is every loss a private, solitary experience,
a path taken alone, where we can count
fallen leaves, decayed mushrooms,
empty chrysalis, forborne conclusions,
unspoken heartaches, lost souls?

Do we rail against losses, or simply count
one, two, who might be the third? Does
numbness count when counting more?

Perhaps only in the Season of Everlasting
might I know you are now safe in some haven
of never-hurt and nevermore. Pray as I do, still I wonder
if you might meet souls of those you’ve never met,
but now might share stories of those
you’ve loved together.

‘Tis a mystery that won’t be answered to
meet my reason, nor until I might meet all seasons,
and find you in the
Season of Everlasting.

good grief woman....

this is beyond beautiful.

You have truly outdone yourself MommaK.

When your muse returns, she returns with a beautiful force...

indeed.

Sissie....Isn't it wonderful that we have the gift of being able to question?  There are so many big ones in your poem.  I think that asking means that you already have the answers down deep inside.  I love this thoughtfilled poem!
