Let me drop a little background here:

I've been studying a lot of greek history lately, and I just finished reading "The Histories" by Herodotus.  In the back of my copy, there was a poem called "The Oracles" written by E.A. Housman.  It was incredible, and it sort of inspired me to write something of my own.

Here goes nothing:

Valor throughout history has played a vital part
It focuses and steels resolve and bolsters weary heart
Through myths and tales of ancient deeds, of heroes from of old
A valiant tale of courage true has often times been told

Of men who struggled fearlessly against o'erwhelming odds
Possessing neither mystic tools nor aid from mystic gods
With strategy and strength they fought, with shield and sword and spear
With heroism, gallantry, and disregard for fear

And though their names are lost to Time, the deeds of each live on
In noble tale or mournful poem or epic, moving song
The men who gave their lives that day forever now will lie
Beneath the dust of ages past, beneath Thermopylae

AMdG

If anyone can think up a good name for this one, please let me know!

"My candle burns at both ends; it will not last the night; but ah, my foes, and oh, my friends--it gives a lovely light!"  -Edna St. Vincent Millay

yes, I like James' suggestion for the title and enjoyed your words here...

Edna St.Vincent Millay is a definite favorite of mine too ... 'what loves my lips have kissed and where and why I have forgotten...:  just beautiful!  RDB

It's a good thing when people are inspired by others to pen their own thoughts.
You did well with this, and I enjoyed it
very much. Thank you!
