When the wind blows cold and lonely-
Out along the Great Divide...
And the line camp's covered up with snow-
As the cowhand waits inside...

He dreams again of Texas-
And it's grassy, coastal plains,
Or the Llano Estacado,
Where it very seldom rains.

And he wonders where the years have gone,
Since he first headed west...
Where the punchers are called 'buckaroos'-
He was once one of the best.

He tired of building fences-
You can't blame the man, or course.
With his thoughts, "If it's worth doin',
You can do it from a horse!"

He hired on with a fair-sized spread-
Out Arizona way...
Mostly just for 'braggin' rights',
He never meant to stay.

That was thirty years ago...
And this is where it ends...
He'll never see old San Antone,
He's outlived all his friends.

At times like this, before the thaw-
He knows he's growin' old...
Old memories tend to come around,
Each time the wind blows cold.

"settling" is a four letter word.

I found this a very enjoyable piece, Gunslinger.

Well crafted rhyme, spiced with a bit of humor, and the poignancy of loss, I enjoyed reading this fine poem, and felt a wisp of cold wind upon my aging skin.
