In the quietude of the woods,
Finally, I can hear
The wheels of my mind
Turning in the stream of reason.
And what does reason reveal?
Something more beautiful
Than the forest of lush, green foliage,
Something more pleasant
Than the soft crackling of dry twigs
Beneath my feet, more than the sight
Of a squirrel darting suddenly into view,
Then at once disappearing, as if a ghostly
Particle in a cloud chamber, a randomness
Of some indeterminate order.
But, then, for the squirrel there is order---
The pursuit of life in the acorn of the wilds---
Its universe, for which it posits no theory
Of origins, nor postulates the necessity
Of gods in the scheme of his meal---
Just there when he seeks it.

The heart of truth reveals the animal of myself,
And I am not ashamed. I, too, seek acorns,
Manna from heaven---light upon the darkness
Of my being. Then how sweet the green nectar
That flows in my veins from the dripping
Winepress of sky, bearing down
Upon the swaying branches and falling leaves!

Yes, I am a scavenger in the woods.
I stand here in reverie in the garden court
Of a movable feast, and the beast cries out
From the upper reaches of a higher self---
Oh, how delightful is that which causes
The saliva to moisten my animal tongue!

This arose from a visit to my home state of Arkansas in 2000. I've revised it many times. Comments and suggestions are most welcome.

Gilead,

Nice to see a Wilson Cloud Chamber mentioned.  They have good schools in Arkansas don't they.

I always enjoyed working in Arkansas, it a state full of nice friendly people.
