Her name was Tangerine Loxi Barriatua (Tanny)
What a name!
She was half Scottish/Irish and half Basque,
Rather pretty with long, red hair.
I didn't realize until many years later
that I was prettier than she was,
I always thought of her as the pretty one.
The closest thing I had to a sister.
She was my best friend when we lived in the project,
We did everything together.
Shared what little we had.
But she was a bit older and grew up first,
leaving me alone in childhood,
feeling sad and neglected,
and wondering what happened.

This makes me want to send you a basket full of hugs.  I am the baby of my family and I remember when all the other kids grew up and moved away. I was alone and I hated it.  I missed them and I missed them being my buffers.

I don't know, Ida - when I read your poem, I just thought of that.

And isn't that just a tremendous state to be in, when there are no soothing answers.

This is a powerful, emotionally outreaching write, dear Ida.

Love and hugs.

Thanks Alison, I often think of Tanny and wonder what happened to her. We moved away when I was about 15 and I never saw her again but then we hadn't had much in common from the time I was 11 and she was about 13  when she went boy crazy on me.

Thanks, Margharita, Yes, that age can be a difficult time as I recall.
