Lumpy oatmeal makes me crazy!

Consumed by Coffee

So many coffee drive-through stands
so many hundreds of flavors;
yet, so little time to simply relax
with a cup of coffee to enjoy and savor.

Espresso once served in demitasse,
now is poured into a paper cup;
drink quickly as you drive
to the gas station to fill ‘er up.

Lattes, cappuccinos, Americano
topped high with thick whipped cream;
oh, toss in a scone or a bagel
for an instant weight-gain dream.

Our parents once bought a cup of coffee
for a quarter or even a dime;
they perked it on the stove top.
We don’t have that kind of time.

We flock in hoards to buy whole beans
with names we can’t pronounce;
we pay homage to our addictions
in half pounds rather than a quarter ounce.

Coffee may be the newest ‘lost art’
Hidden under flavors, chocolate and whip
We don’t pretend to taste the brew
that we gulp instead of sip.

This is the way of our society,
a busy group is what we are.
We sip our sweets to gain our pounds
while running errands in our cars.

Drive on through the drive through!
It’s the American way to live the dream;
order up a 5-shot latte on the go
layer it with honey and flavored cream.

You don’t have to like the taste of coffee
that is not of great concern.
We’re succumbing to a new addiction;
tip your cup and feel the burn!

Oh Alison you make that sound so inviting, I'd have to like coffee after reading your great poem. A big warm hug my dear.

Hey Lindsay, sounds good to me too.  Maybe I should jump in the car with the dogs and drive to the nearest mocha stand.  Or I can make a latte here.  Or I could brew a cup of coffee.  So many choices, so little time!

Thanks, friend.

Actually, I drink tea on occasion but my daughter knows every coffee drive through for ten miles around. I may learn to drink coffee with her after reading your poem.

Over here, black or white and a teaspoon of sugar is about as exciting as coffee gets- (brown sugar if we're feeling particullary adventurous) and this has made me quite eager to experiment.

I'll share a cup of coffee with you if you share a cup of tea with me.  Thank you for reading.

Donna,

Thanks for having a cup with me.  Love you.

I don't like Starbucks - I like the little place on the corner that roasts their own beans.  It's a little local place and they bake a mean scone too.

Got it and am faxing it as we speak.  Love you.

simon,

Never thought of trying brown sugar.  What a good way to get rid of all that rocky hard brown sugar in my cupboard.  Gonna have to have a coffee party.

Thank you.

Love this one, I am a coffee nut myself, but the part I took in was about the American way and always rushing around. We need to slow down and take time to enjoy. Nice job!!!

I'm all about the tea m'self now.

(My son just started at Starbucks too.)

My timing's always been a little off.

Alison,

I like this poem because you show us for what a lot of us are - lazy, selfish, over-indulgent.

Where's my percolater?

Never drink coffee just for taste
Simply put, it's a waste
It's not for taste, never was
We drink coffee for the buzz.

Toe,

Never drink coffee simply for the rush
Add lots of stuff to give you a bigger tush
Sugar is what really makes your blood churn
Dip into the bowl to get the buzz you yearn

Bobby,

If I drink any more my skin will tan.

Al,

I know what you mean.  I thoroughly enjoyed my cups this morning, but I took time to savor them (laced them with some Kahlua though) and drank them out of a real cup while reading the paper.  It was a nice morning.
