an art of measure

i miss
cool autumn
and acorn cap whistles,
wind rustle remembering
green summer, turning
new colors and
collecting
copper-colored oak leaves
and using them as currency.

now the pieces have crumbled
brown, in drawers
full of acorn caps
and quartz stones from the playground
whose glitter faded with the summer sun
and winter windows won’t allow
enough light
to remember their sparkles.

i miss
sprinkler obstacle courses
and running wild.
i miss fighting over binoculars,
and who saw what, because
now we see nothing,
and unruly abandon
has been swiftly and silently
replaced by exercise,
paper money,
and a garbage can full
of a spent and faded childhood.

You did a great job on this, Scribble. Sad but true. Enjoyed it.
