the king, in his vanity,
never leaves the board.
he is prisoner to his own domain.

the queen, all-powerful,
moves as she wishes.
to none save the king shall
she aquiesse.
only in death does she leave her throne.

the bishop, as is his nature,
refuses to walk a straight line.
always talking from both sides
of his mouth.
bound by the yoke of his title.

the rook, or castle,
always runs the straight and narrow.
he stays his course,
protecting his king from the
dangers of this realm.

the knight.
exalted cavalier .
he leaps and bounds over all.
none can sway his path
for he sees through them.
his only downfall is his
restriction of movement.

the pawn, lowly warrior.
with the right mind he is
the most powerful piece of all.
he is camouflaged as weak,
yet even he can topple a king.
he rules by deception,
underestimation is his power.

guided by human hands,
these pieces perform the symphony of war.

all along the rank and file
they wait for guidance.
moving where told, fighting unseen battles,
and sacrificed for the greater good.

"check."

endless power plays.
untold struggles.
so begins the endgame.

darkness descends
upon soul-less imitations of man.

all hail the king!
"checkmate."

the king is dead..

yet he never lived.

This is quite good.  I like how you see the game -- wish I could play it better myself.

This is very good one. Very interesting. Love the read.
I wonder if they knew that they were on little squares.
Very good indeed.

C,

Chess is a nice subject for a write Home-Boy.

I used to like to play chess until I taught my youngest son how to play.  Now he always beats me.  I don't feel too bad.  The kid's got a PhD in math.  He's the champion of the hood.

Excellent work---using the chess game as an allegory for real life situations. An enjoyable read.

You are absolutely right about those pawns.
I've made that 'fatal' mistake of underestimating them more times than I care to admit. Thanks for an interesting read.

Well done...I enjoy writing poetry about
chess because it can be so very romantic
and slightly erotic as well.
