All Mom and Felix’s neighbors
try to put on the hoity-toity,
and look down their pointy noses.

They all know about
what Felix does
out on the street at night,
and they run their yaps
about it from door to door.

The phone lines are a-buzz
with malicious gossip:

“That whole family’s no good.
Where’s the man,
that’s what I’d like to know.”

“Oh yeah, locked-up of course.
I hope they throw away the key.”

“I’d never let my child
do what that child does.”

“I’ve heard about what
he gets up to at night.”

“That woman should be
reported to the welfare.
Letting that young boy
do the stuff he does.”

Mom and Felix’s neighbors
never dined from garbage cans.

If they had,
they might understand
the why and wherefore
of what Felix has to do.

The only one that
seems to understand
what Mom and Felix
are going through,
is Father John from down
at Mother of Divine Grace Church.

Every once in a while,
he’ll come down and sit
with Mom and Felix at Mass.

He’ll talk to Mom,
and put his arm around Felix.

He treats them like
they are his old friends.

Bobby

Sometimes people can be so mean without having a clue as to what is going on. I remember a few neighbors like that.
I think I'm getting pretty good at reading between the lines and understanding where Felix is coming from.

I hope Father John gives them a bowl of chicken soup before they leave...

Yo John,

Lay off Father John, he was a cool person.  Geeez, what do you expect from the guy.

Passing shadows,

Sorry Hon, Mom and Felix are good Catholics.  What's karma anyway?

Artic Wind,

Geez, another karma person.  As far as I know, you only have one chance to get it right.

God bless Father John for his understanding and kindness towards Felix and his mother. He was a port in their life storm.

I remember my brother's best friend when we were about in the 5th and 6th grade.  His friend was the smallest in the class, always fighting, stealing, in trouble.  Later, I understood more about him and how he struggled on so many levels - and I learned that often things are nothing like they appear.

When my brother died, this man was my rock.  He died less than a year later - I think they were meant to be together.  Laughing, doing pranks and being the lovable team they had been in this life.

Sometimes things just are not how they appear to be.

Now in this one I was sure Felix was a cat.  But then I remember the comic "Felix the Cat"

Linda,

Yes, Father John was a kind man, and a wonderful priest in the Church I love.

Alison,

It's too bad about your brother and his good friend.

Things are almost never what they seem to be.

Joyce,

Yes, Felix is a cat, the two legged variety.  Felix is my very own alter ego, third definition.

I have read from your works about Father John.  He sounds like a really good man.
