Felix is in second grade, down
at Saint Francis Xavier School.

Sister Cecilia says
we are all made
in the image of God.

Felix goes home,
and looks in the mirror.

“So, that’s what God looks like.”

Felix likes what he sees,
Sister Cecilia must be right—
but then,
Sister’s always right.

He firmly believes
that to be true.

She has given him
the strength to believe,
that it’s not a sin
to be good looking
or pretty,

it’s a gift from God.

He’ll learn soon enough
that the only sin
in this land of money,
and supposed privilege,
is the sin of being born poor.

That’s a gift from the devil,
sent by way of the idle rich.

Bobby

Felix was an interesting little boy - quite the thinker.  Did he ever voice his thoughts, I wonder.

Amen, "The only sin is the sin of being born poor." I know this to be true.

Alison,

Yes, Felix did give voice to his thoughts.  Many people rather thought Felix to be--all mouth.

Ida,

You've noticed that too?  Thanks for letting me know that.  Felix and I don't feel so alone now.

I was fortunate to be one of the ones who was poor, but didn't realize it at the time.  We all were poor.

Alison,

I think we we're all poor.  Some just a little poorer than others.

Money can buy neither happiness nor love. If I was super rich, I do not think I would feel any different than I do right now...just probly be in a different (warmer!) place....although it cannot buy the above, I'm sure it could buy me better looks than I have now ....

Poor kids can lead unfortunate lifes but with some luck and hard work they can rise above their situation.  I am sure that Felix did.
