Dear daddy

I hate it when you scream at me
I hate it when you get mad
It seems like I hate every moment
When I’m with you, & it makes me sad

You say everything is my fault
That I’m the reason for the divorce
Sorry to break it to you, dad
But you’re the real source

We have those rare moments
When I’m happy around you
It makes me feel I have a real dad
…I wish that could come true

Just remember this one thing, dad…
While you’re screaming inches from my face
I love my mom to death…but you,
You can be replaced.

(I write this only because I’m really mad at him today. I probably won’t mean it later.)

Sometimes it is good to write it out.  I remember feeling like that too.  It's a good thing not to say if feelings change - and they often do.  Even if your Dad sounds like a bit of an ass.  Although if he is an abusive ass -- well, that's another story.

Good writing, Jessica.

Thank you Alison.
I had to go to work with my face all swollen up and red because I was crying so much today. Ughhh.

I didn't have a very good relationship with my Dad either because he was a bit of a bully. Try not to let it get to you. Time will take care of things.

Hey Jessica,

I am sending hugs your way.  It's tough to not get along with your Dad -- take it from one who lived through that experience.  Hang in there and write it all out as you can.

Rain...I don't know all the details, but I'm sure he loves you and maybe some lines of communication between the two of you need to be established. There is no excuse for physical abuse and I hope there isn't any, but if there is find someone to talk to...Paul

Sounds like he's not a bad man just, doesn't really know what to do, it's hard for him too. He hasn't even got memories of himself at your age to fall back on. Young women are like Martians to men. I'm sure he loves you very much. Enjoyed the post.

Its nice to get things out sometimes, I know when I write I get things out I would never say. I also know what you are going through with family because I have lived it my life. Remember all we can do is wake up each day and take the next step.

Nice writing...have you considered living with your Mom?...when parents get divorced its not your fault, its theirs...he needs some counseling so he can accept the truth...for only when you accept the truth and the responsibility will progress be made...James

In my opinion, my friend, children are never the source of divorce. They may be an aggravation in some way, that adds to everything else, but they are absolutely not the source.  Being from divorced parents, I empathize with you complete even with my childhood so many years in the past. But you still have one thing going for you I never did. A dad.  I have never even met mine. Never talked with him.  I'd much rather be mad at him than not have him.

But your poem is beautifully written and you CAN be mad. He CAN be mad also. Just remember, A DAD is better than NO DAD in a majority of cases.

Thanks everybody. Everything is a little better now. No more yelling, thank god.

I can't live with my mom right now because she can't afford me. She just had a baby with another man and has to worry about my half-brother for now.

And yes, being mad at your dad is WAY better than not having one at all. I'm sorry to hear that happened to you.
