Felix is in the Army.
He’s stationed near
where his Dad’s locked up.

Felix’s Uncle Joe,
wants Felix to visit his Dad.

Felix says okay.
Felix figures
he can handle it.

Felix remembers
when his Dad
was taken away.

It wasn’t pretty.

Dad was violent.
Dad was always violent.
Dad was a very, violent person.
Dad was bad with guns.
Dad was bad with knives.
Dad was a violent person.

When they got to the lock-up,
Dad was peeling potatoes.

Dad looked at Felix.
Dad asked Uncle Joe,
“Has he been to prison yet?”

Uncle Joe said,
“No he’s been lucky so far.”
Dad says
“Good, that’s good.”,
and he touched Felix’s face.

That’s all there was,
that’s the visit to Dad.

Felix is older now.
He can handle
that kind of stuff.

He’s in the Army.
He’s a soldier.
He hopes his Dad
is proud of him.

Bobby

Sounds like the army was Felix's saving grace. My youngest brother joined the army when he was 18 and I am certain it saved him from jail or death. I'm sure Felix's father had plenty of time to think about the path his son took and be proud of him in his way.

Nice writing...reminds me of the time I was on KP and I told the mess Sargeant that I wasn't going to scrub his pots...he gave me a lecture about the Army was going to make me or break me...next thing you know I was peeling potatoes half the night...and on a series of following nights I pulled extra guard duty...lost lots of sleep over my failure to clean some pots...James

Dear RDB,

Yes, you know, I think he was.  He was glad to hear I'd stayed out of prison.

Poor Dad.

Bobby, this was very well-written. It may have been simply stated, however, the simplicity of it, as well as the repetition of words, worked very well and packed a powerful punch.

I'm with Ida, I do believe that Felix's Dad was proud of him being in the army ~ and not in jail like himself!

James,

Yes, we do tend to learn things in the Army.  I hated KP myself.

I know he was proud. Anyone who serves the country and stays out of the wrong path the father may have taken...has to have a dad that's proud. No matter the situation.

Simon,

Yes, that is sad.  Dad knew how things were.  It's interesting to note that China, with 1.3 Billion people has few people incarcerated than the U. S. with only 300 million people.

That is sad too.

The Philadelphia Inquirer this morning called the U. S. "Prison Nation".

LadyTom,

You've got it Hon.  There is nothing like that natural blood bond.  There's no way you can get away from it.

John,

Perhaps, however Felix feels it might be due to the ageing process.

I read this days ago and got kind of choked up.  I think that one touch said everything he could not say.  I hope it was a healing touch for Felix - good poem, Bobby.

This is a theme that reoccurs in your writing.  You make me feel for Felix.
