.
Nil By Mouth

Slowly I became less comatose,
And more aware of my surroundings

When I noticed the drips either side of the bed
Panic entered my head & my heart started pounding

For it was with some alarm
I noted only one tube in my arm

The other snaked under the clothes on the bed
Causing me to wonder where it lead

The answer was less than charming ...

By using my knees I made a tent,
In an effort to see just where it went

I have to say it gave me quite a scare
When I realised the proximity to my derriere’

Apparently, the reason that I have 2 drips
Is because no fluid can pass my lips

Then a Nurse asked me what I’d like to eat
And read off a list of culinary treats

Perhaps I’d like the house surprise
In which all the ingredients are liquidised ?

And then added with much delight
I can get anything down that little pipe !

I answered given the circumstances
It made no difference to me

But if there was any chance
I’d still rather not have the broccoli

When it had all gone
She could scarcely contain her laughter

Now wasn’t that fun John,
What would you like for afters?

Well, I prefer Chardonnay when it comes to wine
But actually I’d rather have a cup of tea if you don't mind

Then off she trots returning with a jug
And says silly me, you won’t be needing this mug

When she began to pour I cried out please stop
She said what’s wrong, is the water too hot?

No not at all, in fact I’d like another
But do you think this time perhaps

....I could have some sugar?

John,

Funny one.  I didn't remember it.

Good work, as usual.

Thank you for the smiles, dear John. This is hilarious... of course the situation for you when you were in that moment was all but funny, I guess. Your attitude is contagious, this poem should hang in hospitals to cheer up the patients.
Love.

Not funny to me. Tube fed my mother for 2 months last year. I blended and feed her everything that she usually refuse to eat, including raw broccoli.

But for you, I shall smile for your positive attitude.

I admire your sense or humor in this situation, John. Might as well laugh, crying won't help.

When I saw this read as a "repost",
I searched the archives, far and wide,
but nary a post could I find...

so I suspect it stems from another course,
and possibly even another horse...
but your humor is one that will strongly linger...
and I shall be glad to sweetly finger
a spoonful of sugar
along to you.

Just keep them coming, I like your brew!

John, I can certainly sympathise with you for your stay in hospital and all those

tubes. I have had a dozen operations and spent months in hospital but I have only

the highest praise for those doctors and nurses, they do a wonderful job. Good luck

to you my friend and a speedy recovery.

M'dear John, you manage to maintain your sense of humour even in the most difficult of circumstances.

"By using my knees I made a tent,
In an effort to see just where it went"

~ Your knees? This nurse knows better!

~ It took an effort to see where it went?!? ~ I'm somewhat intrigued by that comment.

Well, it's time for your needle! But I have a little surprise in it for you! ~ SUGAR

Loves, laughs, 'n healing hugs,

Nurse Angel

............

Aunt T, 99? Is that how many times you are going to run me over at the cross light on  Sunset??
.............
Sunshine,

So you like my brew?
Then you are in for a treat
I’ll send  a ‘sample’ to you
Of what they made me eat

My favourite cup of tea
It most certainly was not
It was stewed broccoli
With parsnip on top…

It was originally posted in behind closed doors. I put it in there because of the reference to the bodywork surrounding my exhaust as I did not want to offend any one.

..................

Lindsay, I too can only speak highly of the Drs & Nurses. However, I have to own up to using more than a little poetic licence with this one. It came about from my observations of others and was not a by product (!) of my operation

..................

Simon, Thanks, living in London you must catch the tube quite a lot I imagine…

..................

Hope, see the reply to Lindsay …one of the guys in the bed next to me was on Nil by mouth  & when the nurse brought me a cup of tea, she  had to move his IV drip to put it on my  table. He said he would love a drink but had to be fed via a tube, the rest as they is history…

......................

Nurse Angel, I know you know better, but I thought we were going to keep that just between ourselves? I can’t believe as a \nurse you are intrigued by that so let me clarify, it went under the bedclothes, snaked up my leg ( taped into position) and the disappeared right up my Nightie…..

Poor dear John, I knew I was wrong
But other thoughts were far more fun.
A tube up the rear, is rather drear',
So I shall let 'it' rest and be done.

99 means good-night.

The pipe....I figured that it must be something critical in the hospital esp when with a IV.

Have a very good evening, dear John.
