The hood was
just that tough.
It had a reputation
throughout the city.

The word was out,
stay away from the place.

Felix and the gang
couldn’t figure out why,
strangers and people
new in the hood
always walked in the center
of New Market Street
when they were just sitting
peacefully
on the settlement house steps,
telling outrageous lies
to each other.

It made them feel bad.
It made them mad.
It made them feel like
they should mug the guy—
but they never did.

Yap, Everyone says it.

When I first arrived New York, I took a long walk the second day from 168Th to 12nd street, a very happy three hours walk to see New York. Only later people told me that I walked through Harlem. My, my, THAT area where I learned even  in another language. It gave me cold sweat each time I thought about it. What if that day, a gun pointed at me?

it was like this, and it is like this .....hopeless

LadyTom,

People have erronous misconceptions about people living in what are considered "bad" neighborhoods.

Sitting on the settlement house steps, we would never consider hurting anyone--and yet the strangers would walk in the middle of the street because they were afraid of us.

BTW, Harlem is a fine proud place.

Bobby

Ida,

Yes, that's what they say.  I still contend that home is where the hat is.  In other words, it’s all in a persons head.

I still live in the same general neighborhood.  The old hood has become too gentrified.  Neighborhoods in Philadelphia change over the years.  They seem to go in cycles of about thirty years.

I did a similar thing to LadyTom 20 years ago in South Central LA, I got a lot of verbal but I just kept walking at a steady pace...sometimes bravado just makes guys want to appear tough, I was no threat & they knew it...

Dear RDB,

Felix and the gang are nice people.  There was no reason for the idiot walking out in the middle of the street to avoid them.  The creeps that did that could have gotten hit by a car.  All because of their irrational fear.

Me, and the gang, we hated that.

I understand this! Growing up in 'the bad part of the SF Valley' we had an out-of-town football game cancelled because the other school's players refused to get onto the same field with our 'hoods'...so we won by default. LOL, talk about a riot of laughter!

Midnitesun,

That is so cool.  That's the way to win football games.  Scare the other team off.  You GO!

The other team was a bunch of real losers.

People are often scared of the unknown.  This poem lets us look at things from the other side.
