The uninitiated think I own you
Silly people, they do not understand
That you are a shepherd

True to your name, you guard
I wake to a low growl when cars pass slowly
All sounds are heard by the sentry

True to your name, you protect
Our home always under your watchful eye
My daughter, completely safe with you

True to your name, you tend my spirit
Drawing me to play, chase, tug, run
Head-butting me and stealing my socks

True to your name, you find and return
Lost in thought, a cold nose brings me back
My hands find solidity when buried in your coat

True to your name, you teach
Acceptance, forgiveness, loyalty
Hope, curiosity and perseverance

True to your name, you love
Unconditionally, without reservation
With the purity of a shepherd

Welcome!

Call me initiated -- I don't own my "Shadow" either.  True to his name, my Shadow is a part of me and always with me.

Your poem had me stopping his loud snores at my feet to give him a great big hug!

I love animals. I don't have a dog since I had to have my little pekinese put down a few years ago but I have six cats. They are all so lovable and devoted (cats too) People who don't have pets don't know what they're missing. I think this tribute to your best friend is very touching. I will lookforward to your future postings.

Thank you for all the warm welcomes and comments! As for my shepherd, I wrote this because I don't think we are the only ones created in His image - sometimes animals do a better job of displaying that than we do.
