Felix’s job at the resort hotel
was with the grounds crew.

It was hard work,
and he was way homesick
for the hood.

He wrote a letter to his Mom,
saying
“Get me out of here, I hate it.”

Of course that did no good.
His Mom just ignored his letters,
as well she should.

After all,
he was getting money,
and being fed.

What more could
a street kid
possibly ask for—

nothing, that’s what.

One day
the hotel owner
was out touring the grounds.

He noticed Felix sweating away
pushing a lawn mower.

The hotel owner
liked what he saw.

Felix,
as we all know,
was a good looking kid.

The hotel owner
says to himself—
self,
that kid would look good
in the dining room.

They outfitted Felix
with a snow white uniform,
gave him a tray
with all kinds of pickles,
and bowls of butter chips.

Felix was on his way,
a new life in fact.

He made a lot of friends,
with all the guests,
young, and old.

Bobby

Yep, she does.  With my Mom she always gave advice with a plate of something to eat, just to keep you there with your mouth full so you had to listen.

As my friend used to say...you don't make no money staying home...this reminds me of an old song when a young boy went off to Camp Granada...something like this..."Hello mudda, hello fadda, this is me at Camp Granada, it is very entertaining and they say we'll have some fun if it stops raining, all the counselors hate the waiters, and the lake has alligaters, let me come home if you miss me, I would even let Aunt Bertha hug and kiss me...wait a minute, its stopped raining, guys are swimming, guys are sailing, playing baseball, gee thats bedder, mother, father kindly disregard this letter."...something like that...it was a fun song...James

Dear RDB,

Felix is enjoying himself.  He's even putting a little meat on his bones.  The food's good there.

James,

I remember that song.  It's exactly what Felix is thinking.  He wants to stay.

this 'write' reminds me of bygone days in Eagles Mere, PA...

Secondhanddreampoet,

This story is based on my job at the old Crestmont Inn.  That was in the summers of 1953 to 1957, if my memory servs me right, and it may not.  However, that is the time period I worked summers there.

It was a wonderful experience that basically saved my life.  It kept me off the streets those summers.  I'll never forget the kindness of the people that owned the place.

John,

Yes, that was a great summer.  Don't worry, Felix made sure no food was wasted.

Thanks for reading, and your good comment.

It is good to get a glimpse into the writer`s life as you mentioned that this poem was based upon your life in the summers of the 50s.
