I won't soon forget that little house
built of stones
that my brother and I
still refer to as "The rock house"
or that cold, miserable winter
that iced our minds and chilled our bones
to the point where
neither of us has ever forgotten
the winter in that house.
So much time has flown
but the years could not compete with stone.
and though it's old and run down,
the rock house is still around.
Not long ago
my brother took a picture of that house,
an image without the snow,
and just looking at it
still made me shiver with cold.
I could feel icy fingers
reaching out to touch my shoulder,
when morning came too soon,
and my mother's voice calling me
to get up and go to school.

I am sure that little house did its best to keep you warm.  There must have been another chill it could not control.  How nice it is still there.  Joyce

My family once lived in a house when I was pretty little.  It was so cold that my brother and I wanted to make my Mom coffee one morning.  We couldn't use the stove - so we stacked wood for a little campfire in the middle of the floor.  She walked in just as we were going to light it.  The hairbrush on my butt is a memory I won't soon forget!  It was one cold little house though.

A very powerful memory, dear Ida!
The cold was felt! I do hope you have also some warm memories of that little house.

Dear Ida, may your bones never, ever feel that cold again. I do believe that you are now of sturdy stock for what you have endured in the past.

Giving you an extra WARM hug!

The rock house was in Idaho during the coldest winter I can ever remember. I was eleven years old. Maybe that's why I live in So. Cal. now.
