Felix Hears Loud Whispers |

Felix is feeing the effects of his old man being locked up in the slammer again. He hears loud whispers at school. The crowning touch of course, was when his fourth grade teacher asked about his family. Of course she did it very discretely, just loud enough for the class to hear. “Felix, how are things going at home?” Felix blushed, and said nothing. From that day forward, Felix nurtured such an intense hatred for the woman, that he almost— but not quite, felt bad about it. Bobby |

Clever title! If the teacher knew that his father was in jail, then she should have used her "quiet voice". Otherwise, she appears to be a bit of a phony baloney! ~ But, then again, she may have meant well and might have been hard of hearing and didn't know how loud she was speaking. Whatever the case, that surely must have made Felix feel mighty uncomfortable. I think poor Felix needs a hug. Earth Angel, Felix says "Thanks loads for the hug." No, if truth be told, she was just a busy-body, and a very bad teacher. Felix never forgave her. Is it any wonder that some kids hate school? Bobby |

This hurts. I understand Felix's reaction. Especially teachers need to think twice before speaking in front of the class to one student given such delicate circumstances. Well rendered deplorable situation, dear Bobby. love Margherita |

Margherita, I’ve found in my long and checkered history with teacher, that many learn all the childish bad habits of their students. I mean—who’s supposed to be teaching who? Bobby, I like the matter-of-fact way you deal with this teacher. no excuses for her. I know you have her number because I've known the type. When I was in school I used to have to deal with insensitive teachers who thought it was cute of funny to call me Ida Bell or Ida May (neither is my name) and I hated being called either one. My name is actually Ida Victoria. They knew better because it was obvious that I didn't like it (I was never one to hide my feelings) but they did it anyway. Ida (not Bell not May) |

The most telling part of this poem was "loud whispers." Those are whispers meant to be heard, solely for the purpose to harm. I wrote something about this years ago: "People who feel the need to push others down in an attempt to feel above them, only creates a FALSE sense of elevation; where oxygen is scarce and illusions of grandeur are commonplace." Too many people like this around. I enjoyed your poem a great deal. |

Dear Bobby Jordan, The crowning touch for me is the voice of the speaker in the poem. The speaker is unsentimental but sympathetic. The voice is matter-of-fact about very tough material, which some poets would inflate and editorialize about in the poem. Your speaker is smart and knows better. He gives us the bones of the situation, and lets the reader filling them in bring the flood of outrage with it that the situation deserves. Notice the number of posts that offer sympathy for Felix. The poet earned those pieces of praise with what his speaker didn't say, and that was very artful indeed. That would be you, Bobby Jordan; that would be you. These Felix poems do need some small fixes here and there, but they are very very good. Thank you for giving them to us. You have a rich mine of high grade ore here. Sincerely, BobK. |

Simon, Believe it or not, Felix laughs a lot. He has a hearty, unrestricted laugh. Sometimes he'll laugh so much, that he looses balance, and rolls on the floor. I'll write one about Felix laughing. Bobby |
