Comfort Food
by Linda L. Dowd

My tummy is a-growlin’
~ It wants some ‘real’ food.
It’s had enough of salads,
and it’s in a ‘fowl’ mood!

~ Some finger-lickin’ chicken,
fried taters and baked beans.
Hot-from-the-oven cornbread,
is great by any means.

Prime ribs dripping gravy,
yorkshire puddings piled high.
Creamy mashed potatoes,
and Grandma’s apple pie

Catfish nicely battered,
and fried a golden brown
Black-eyed peas ‘n chitlins,
and beer to wash them down.

A turkey stuffed with dressing,
and sauces on everything.
Make my tummy happy,
~ I can even hear it sing!

Big ‘n juicy sausages,
with pancakes on the side.
A slab of country bacon,
on a plate a mile wide.

Savory stew with dumplin’s,
and buttered homemade bread.
Top it off with key lime pie,
then sleep it off in bed!

Lettuce tossed with vinaigrette,
just doesn’t sate my soul.
I’d rather fill my belly up,
than have an empty hole!

Comfort food’s the way to go,
it makes my tummy smile.
To keep it from complainin’,
I’d walk a country mile.

My tummy is a-growling,
~ It wants some ‘real’ food.
It’s had enough of salads,
and it’s in a ‘fowl’ mood!

Grinning at you, EA or should I say, "Growlin' with you"?  The salads just aren't doing the trick!   Love this and plan to save this crunchy morsel for the next venge!   Much enjoyed reading your poetry again.

Hi, misc! You've been misc-ed!

I normally eat a very healthy diet, but whenever I am stressed, I crave comfort food. Since Sy's passing, my salad plates just aren't cutting it!

So good to hear from you!

Earth Angel,

Stop right there.  Get up from the table and walk away.  You don't need that "oink" stuff.

Hello, Hawaii Man ~

What? No pineapple in your soup? lol

Actually, vegetable noodle soup sounds good to me too! From what I have gathered from your poems 'n replies, you and I have a similar, healthy diet.

If I indulge any of my cravings for comfort food, I end up feeling sluggish ~ and guilty!

Howsabout sharing a pretend pizza with me?

Hugs 'n hamburgs,

lol That was cute! If I did eat all of that food, I most certainly would be a "piggy"! Mind you, there are times when I indulge in calorie-laden, culinary pleasures. ~ But not very often.

Roniece, I haven't a clue what chitlins are. lol I just threw them in there for some of our American friends from the south.

I was a good little 'angel' and ate a very healthy dinner this evening. I had a grilled skinless chicken breast and vegetables that my daughter prepared! ~ But a piece of key lime pie sure would have topped it off nicely!

Love to you! ~ and a big hug,

Grazie Angelo Terrestre, for this fun write! Well a protesting empty tummy isn't really funny, but eating what we like is definitely deep pleasure.

It would be nice to have a spaghetti party, but prepared in the true authentic Italian way! The only comfort food that I really don't want to do without is CHOCOLATE! A little bit that makes life sweeter. But often I don't store it, to not be tempted ... WHY oh WHY do we have to feel guilty when eating what we like?

I love healthy food too, I love bread and recently I have found Swiss bread here and you can imagine that I buy it now regularly, also for another of my Swiss friends living here. The bread of childhood, hmmmmmmmm!

Sometimes I wonder what pleasures will substitute these earthly pleasures when we move on? We are not only going to sing, are we? Thinking of beloved Seymour ...

In my younger (and thinner!) days, I did a lot of modeling and I had to watch everything that went into my mouth. Now I watch everything go on my hips! lol

I was being oh-so-good
but I too, wanted comfort food.
Those oranges? They would not do.
I tip-toed to kitchen, smooth
like a cat in hunt of mouse,
stealthy looking north then south--
I wanted something in my mouth!
(Be careful what yer thinkin' you! )
I opened up the frigidaire
to see what goodies were in there--
salad, salad--tupperware!
I opened up the lid...beware!
Hamburger Helper! "YAY" I cried.
(actually that is a lie)
"yay" was thought within my mind
because I've got this huge behind.
The devil on my shoulder said,
"You know you want it, go ahead"
The angel flew back to my bed,
and suggested that I take some bread
just to keep things sanctified.
I scooped enough to satisfy
those raging hormones equalized
by butter spread on bread--both sides.
Greasy, cheesy, macaroni
spinning micro-ceremony
sizzling in...acrimony?
cacaphony? MACARONI.

I just can't seem to make neat rhyme.

But off I crept--the cat burglar.
In the dark. (I knew the turf.)
Just when you think I can't do worse?
I fell! And "EXPLETIVE!" (It hurt.)

Macaroni everywhere!
In my mu mu, in my hair.
I called for help to no one there
but my faithful dogs who cared.

Oh yes, they came to my rescue!
They ate the noodles from my mu mu.
What loyalty, I said, "et tu?"
They licked the floor in gratitude.

I'd hit my noggin on the step.
My kneecap was behing my leg.
My foot was swollen like a peg.
I spent two days laid up in bed.

All for the love of comfort food.
And yes, this is another true
tale told by serenity,
suffering for her sanity

as she ponders what she'd say
the look upon her doctor's face--
he's heard so many strange stories--
so I just grabbed that swollen knee

and popped it back to proper place.
I'd hate to be such a disgrace!
I wish my neck would do the same.
I'm gettin' dizzier this way.-->

The end

*sheesh*

I really wish I'd made this one up.

I guess you can tell I can relate, huh, Ms. Linda? *blushin' hugs*

Lindy Lou, you made me hungry!
Now I'm thinking I should make
a big lasagna for dinner, with
tons of cheese bubbling over the
sides of the pan, and garlic bread
dripping with butter
and maybe a German chocolate cake
(I love eating it frozen)

but I'll be good, and have my salad
~theatric sigh~
and mutter at you while I eat it
*grins*

Though time and tide for no man wait,
and I should look and run,
my appetite again is wet
and hunger's pangs have won.

A feast of food and rhyme prepared
for all your friends to share
enticement of Angelic type
for passing men to snare?

Alas, like all ungrateful guests
I'll fill my face and run
remembering where I had my fill
and stopped by for some fun!

Hi Hi, K K

I can't let a friend of mine go hungry. I was just flappin' some jacks and they have your initials carved in them! ~ One stack? ~ or two?

And howsabout some of our Canadian peameal bacon on the side and cooked to perfection?

Oh, and some of my homemade preserves to sweeten the deal? ~ Blueberry Heaven! Tastes divine!

See you soon! The coffee's brewin'!
