This house is darker now, as candles burn past molten quick,
The furnace ever colder now, its flames infirm and sick.
A sheen of slowly drifting dust alights on all in sight,
And memories are not enough to warm this house at night.

Your picture hangs on shadowed wall, 'tween stains of sallow green,
As eyes that danced, in times gone by, trace movements yet unseen.
I know it's just illusion, caused by shimmers in dim light,
But memories are not enough to light this house at night.

Your laughter hides in every creak of every rustic board,
As house joints settle for the night with sighs I long ignored.
Your voice yet whispers through each room, but labor though I might,
The memories are not enough to hear this house at night.

This missing you remains a quiet, ever-spreading ache,
A hole that, still unfilled, fills every hour I'm awake.
How can something not really here, by dint of being gone,
Bring such an empty pain into my house from dusk to dawn?

Your touch upon my shoulder is a phantom of my mind,
I will not turn, I cannot turn, for fear of what I'll find.
The squeeze lasts but a moment more, and then, like you, is quit,
With just enough of gentle strength that I'll remember it.

I take a deeper, longer breath, then slowly stand and tread
Down darkened hall, past silent bath, then to my waiting bed.
How much darker, colder, silent, would my house forever be
Had I not known your name at least just momentarily?

The loss you left behind, the emptiness I'm going through,
Exist today only because they once were filled with you.
I close my eyes, brush tears on cotton, knowing it's all right.
My memories will be enough to fill my dreams tonight.

***

Seymour Tabin left behind more memories than most ever will. More, I suspect, than most ever could. He was a good man, a gentle man, of which I sometimes think we have seen too few. He laughed easily and well. Sy will be greatly missed. This world, and this community, will go forth poorer for having lost his continued presence, but so much richer for having known him all these years. For that, and for the memories, I am grateful.

He will not be forgotten.

Truly beautiful words for our dear Seymour who has moved on, but indeed will never be forgotten.
Grateful for the touch of his heart, for the beauty and wisdom he shared, for being an example of what a true gentleman is and looks like.

Thank you dear Ron!

Dear Ron, beautiful poem. Now, I remember that I read this before. The last line of each S was so strong a voice. What a good time to repost it and THAT is what we want to say.

And memories are not enough to warm this house at night.
But memories are not enough to light this house at night.
The memories are not enough to hear this house at night.
My memories will be enough to fill my dreams tonight.

Thank you dear Ron.

This House has so many pressure treasures which Sy has left us to go back and read, but tea time will never be the same without him.  He will be sorely missed around here.  What a light he has shown!

Ron,
It speaks so well the truth and the tribute reflects the feelings of us all. Your home provides many opportunities. We knew him first because of this place and now we mourn together in the strength of each other and the memories you have facilitated. God bless Sy.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane,
I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

I thought of it immediately upon hearing of Seymour's passing~
Thank you for reposting it~

I'd like to reply to each tribute to this beautiful man, but since I had to choose, I chose this one, because I owe you a debt of gratitude. Without you, this place would not be, and I would never have never known that I could aspire to be a better person, as proven by the example of lives well lived, and loving words well chosen as an example to follow.

Seymour Tabin makes me want to be a better person. Thank you so much for giving us this place, where such small miracles happen every day.

It took me a few times to read this through... tears kept getting in the way.

So many times, Seymour reminded me of my dad. Reading this, I ache for them both... even as I know how lucky I am to have known them.

Incredible write, Ron... thank you.
