Its January
and its colder
than hell.

After school,
Felix would like to go home,
but its cold there too,
ever since Felixs old man
got taken by the cops.

The only thing his old lady
wants to do is
yell at him.

She wont give him
anything to eat.

Shes acting nuts.

Sometimes hell stay
at Butch or Wawas place,
but their old man and old lady
got fed-up with seeing,
and feeding him.

His ears are stiff,
and feel like
they are likely to break off,
his hands are burning,
and hes lost feeling in his feet.

Some times hell go down in
the subway and hang around.

There are crazy people down there,
and he doesnt like that.

So he just stays out in the cold,
and takes it,
until its time to go home,
and try to sleep.

Bobby

I can relate to the cold in the times I spent in the Army in Germany...remember bundling up in everything I had to go out to the fring on guard duty...was so glad to hear that 3/4 ton truck coming to pick me up...James

James,

Thanks for responding.  The cold is what makes the extreme northern, and southern nations aggressive and powerful.  It's all an effort to keep warm.  It molds their character.

I know how miserable the cold can be. When I was young and lived in the project in Boise, Idaho we had to walk quite a ways to school. We didn't have much in the way of winter clothes because we didn't have much money. By the time we got to school we were so cold and stiff that it took us an hour to thaw out and then our hands and feet would itch something awful as they thawed out.

As one who tremendously minds the cold...
I believe this 'write' captures the reality of it exceptionally well!

applause!!

Ida,

Yes, what you say is what the cold is all about--pure misery.

Secondhanddreampoet,

Thanks, I'm pleased this one came across as real to you.

You write well of the misery that children face.  Your poem entitled `Donuts` in `City Boy Stays Alive` is etched into my brain.
