Tomato Soup

She saw into those light green skies
where mindful lay ladies laid
she really didn’t go there ~
instead, jarred luscious fruits
and made
heaven breads that were salt-yeasty
and full of damp wealth, warm
and clung to him, come home surely ~
as love took in his charms.

Winter Mondays were for tomato soup
and when there was no cream
some evaporated thick-styled milk
made it more than it
could seem;
the yeasty bread was filling
with a small dab of oleo ~
and somewhere, later, in the skies
would come a lusty yippie-ki-yo.

She would make the best of nothing
from something she had never learned;
any regrets – she held inside her –
as from him, she’d never turn.
A cold day made for a
tomato soup night
to really remember the very best;
when it wasn’t called a comfort food
but ranged from home fires, long-blessed.

On Mondays, here, it's red beans & rice--a tradition that goes back to the days of Mondays being laundry day, and red beans generally cook themselves, all day long.

But tomato soup was always Cambell's. I don't think I can say I ever had any other kind, so thank you.

And for me, when it's cold, my Dad's potato soup is what I crave.

Or my Mom's vegetable soup.

Or gumbo.

*wince*

I think I'll just sit a while to read and NOT eat at this time of night.

y'made me hungry for both words and soup yanno--but after Nan's bout with reading and eating--that's a no-no at the comp.

Was that clam chowder all over your keyboard, Nan?

*laughing*

Much enjoyed.

And from the numbers on the scale, I've much enjoyed much too long!

Memories can keep you warm ~ especially a mother's homemade soup. Your poem is a Rockwell painting in words.

A true delight to read, dear Karilea!
My Mom also made a tomato soup, which I would never ever be able to repeat. There was that special touch. You make me truly want to try to evoke that fragrance of soup and that coziness of home.

love,

Dear Sissie...I love the way certain things can become a person, like my "Green Bean Mother" or the smell of a certain perfume.

A mother can make a simple thing into the best there is, and can bring them back in a beautiful fog of nostalgic life, again.

Tomato soup is Love    ::smiles::
Nobody made a better cold cut sandwich than my mother.   No one made a better PB&J than my Grandma.   I truly believe that one can taste the "love".  But...   my beliefs are like Marlon Brandos rebellion in "Wild Ones"...
Whadda ya got?
Also... I miss my Mama's spoon bread and cold bread pudding.
Every Holiday...There is a competition to re-create her potato salad.  ::smiles::
If one had the exact ingredients and proper amounts...It would make no difference.
Am I rambling?    I tend to ramble
I will ramble on
Enjoyed !!!!    (((Sunshine)))

That is how I learned to make Tomato Soup
and Grilled Cheese sandwiches....and on top
of the grilled cheese....a large slice of
tomato with salt and pepper sprinkled on it.

OH MANNNNNN, where are the tomatoes.???

Karilea

I have been reading this since you posted it and each time, I love it more.  I saved it to my library.

When I was little I told my oldest sister that when I grew up I would eat Tomato Soup every night and have chocolate ice cream for dessert.

I still think that when I grow up, I just might do that.
