     January  1

A cold-beacon moon
illuminates the bitter
mountain forest

The wind-pierced
pines sing grand
laments to
  transience

Winter leaves us
most alone…
with memories and
sorrows

The new year
is an empty vessel

... and the empty vessel waits to be filled adequately. We have our responsibilities in this task I guess!

Wonderful imagery as usual, dear Bruce! I hear that sad undertone ... wish you to cheer up on this first day of the year!

Love,

Hmmm, guess we'll have to find ways to fill that vessel with hope and compassion, love and kindness, enough to make even winter moonbeams dance with joy!

Fill the vessel with words, Bruce. We're all waiting to drink from your cup of "deep time" wisdom.

"memories and sorrow" ....the effect of these words reminded me of a poem I read recently in which she said "I love thee with the breath, smiles, tears, of all my life."...The author Elizabeth Browning, the poem, How do I love thee?  (Sonnet 43)

The trick being to fill it more carefully and satisfactorily than we spent what riches were in the jar for the last.

Great work.

What would you attempt to do...if you knew you could not fail?.

Ah, Bruce...you need but go out
and see the close-enough to touch stars...

only in winter...only in winter...

HNY Bruce!

Shall I read as however the winter did to us, the New Year after all is a new and clean and unfilled vessel"?  Otherwise I should expect that those memories and sorrows  sink us all down to the past.

my thought

Yes, Bruce, it is somewhat of a sad write but thank goodness spring always comes.  Memories, and even if they be teamed up with sorrow, simply need to be noted and known. That knowing should perhaps be the spur for different experiences in the future but as in all things, it is up to us.  Thank you for making me think of my own past and future experiences!

My eyes were immediately drawn to the word "transience" in the heart of your poem -- this is so well done,
a fine way to start this new year. I am especially enjoying the poetry dialogue between you and Huan Yi.
THAT is a pleasure to witness.

I especially love the sound of reading this:
"The wind-pierced
pines sing grand
laments to
  transience"

I feel the empty chill, and I can hear the lonely song.

Excellent!
